From 10 Minute Selfie To 10K Hate Comments - Katy Perry's Space Tour

Do you wonder what happens when you shoot for the stars (in this case, literally!) and land back on the Earth to a very upset crowd in your X page and comments? Not a good day to be Katy Perry. A 11 minute girl’s trip to space gone wrong add in a comment from a particular fast food chain – you get what’s happening now. Want tea? There’s a full course meal to dig in.

Starting With the Girl’s Squad

On April 14, 2025, the pop diva Katy Perry took Blue Origin’s milestone all-female spaceflight, alongside journalist Gayle King, philanthropist Lauren Sánchez, astronaut Amanda Nguyen, NASA engineer Aisha Bowe, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn. The space tour lasted just 11 minutes, but meant so much more as a courageous step toward representation of women in science, tech, and commercial space exploration. Katy, who was wearing a futuristic, metallic silver flight suit,  posted a selfie moments before takeoff. Little did she know that would break the internet!

The Rage of Internet

The thing is, in our age of immediate scrapbooking, inspiration wears off fast. As the capsule landed, online backlash was already in full swing. Critics immediately condemned the environmental cost of luxury space travel, dubbing it tone-deaf amid the climate crisis.

Actress Olivia Munn tweeted: “Spaceflights shouldn’t be your weekend plans while the planet burns.” Notably Model Emily Ratajkowski said the same thing with an added term ‘Disgusting’ to her analogy.

Some of her social media comments say,

I came to make sure everyone was hating her

Burning the planet, well done ….

Definitely selling my tickets

No longer a fan. (with an ‘X’ emoji followed by)

Wendy’s Drop the Mic Moment

To spice things up, the now notoriously ironic Tweet from Wendy’s arrived. Wendy’s is known for its cheeky social media voice, and proved it further by tweeting: “Can we send her back?” The account took off fast with engagement. Some people found it funny, others condemned the brand for mocking a moment of feminist progress.

The Tweet triggered a digital landslide. There’s now think pieces, fan debates, and calls to cancel the brand. Not to mention, Katy’s concert tickets are in the hang. Some side with Wendy’s and believe they hold celebrities accountable. Others believe Wendy’s this time undermined a feminist moment.

Enter: Kesha with a cup of W…

Things got heated when Kesha shared a confusing photo while drinking from a Wendy’s cup. There was no caption. No emojis. Just Kesha looking through the camera. Fans and pop culture geeks were sure to get the message loud and clear. Why the drama? Because Perry’s 2024 release, 143, was co-produced with Dr. Luke, who Kesha accused of abuse. Perry never publicly commented about it though, but Kesha supporters have always been icky about Perry continuing to work with Dr. Luke.

So when Kesha shared that photo? That was not just shade. That was a warning of a storm.

Silence From Perry

Katy has kept quiet during the internet uproar. She shared an Instagram carousel of memories from the spaceflight and called it “transcendent” and thanked her spaceflight companions for “lifting each other up — literally and spiritually” apart from that nothing major.

Her radio silence has raised more questions than it’s answered: Is silence dignity or avoidance? Can you celebrate female empowerment while disregarding the ethical questions that follow behind?

Fame Through the Algorithms

This entire saga is not simply about space or pop stardom, it is about the tightrope walk celebrities must perform in a hyper-aware hyper-critical environment. Every post, every collaboration, every venture is open to scrutiny.

As a society, we now look to our stars to be entertainers, activists, eco-conscious stewards, and centers of morality all in one neatly manicured grid and we are so quick to tear them back down if they do not comply, or even successfully escape.
