Match 30 of IPL 2025 between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) provided all that – and more. For those of us following along virtually, this one brought back the feelings that there is so much more to IPL than just a league. It’s an emotion.
LSG, setting in to bat first in Lucknow, did not get off to the start they would have wanted. While the pitch had early grip and bounce, CSK’s seasoned new-ball attack made sure they made the most of it, by the end of the powerplay, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran were back in the dugout and LSG were stumbling at 23/2.Then came the skipper. Rishabh Pant’s season has been somewhat erratic so far, but he played a different role with this knock. A composed, mature, and masterful 63 off 49 balls was a valuable contribution that kept the innings afloat. He rotated strike well and took advantage of anything loose, while displaying an admirable ability to channel and diffuse pressure. Mitchell Marsh contributed solidly as well, with a quick-fire 30 off 24, but it was hard to score boundaries in the middle overs of the innings.
Ravindra Jadeja is as reliable as they come, and while he struck a couple of times and strangled runs to finish with 2/24, the true strangler for LSG was Noor Ahmad. His bowling was outstanding, with long periods of economical over rates that weren’t even worth the effort to score from as he ended with 0/13 off 4 overs. LSG managed a consolation and competitive total of 166/7, which, while good, would not be above par against a batting-heavy CSK.
CSK needed more than just runs on the scorecard to get out of their five-match slump. They needed confidence and they got a big dose of it right at the top. Sheikh Rasheed made an impact on debut – with flair and fearless intent – in his innings of 34 off 20. Alongside Rachin Ravindra, the pair took CSK to 52/0 in 5 leaf-light overs. But like all the T20 matches, the momentum swung after some stellar captaincy and bowling from LSG. Ravi Bishnoi’s variations and Aiden Markram’s off-spin slowed down the scoring, as came from 52/0 to suddenly be 96/4 in just the 13th over. CSK’s run-rate began to creep, and it began to feel like the Super Giants were in control. This is when Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni took charge.
Dube, who often acts as the silent hero, remained composed and maintained tempo for a firm score of 43* off 37 balls. Dube nudged and rotated, and pounced where necessary and our captain cool was all fireworks in this match. With 39 needed off 24 balls, MS Dhoni reminded the world why he is impossible to write off. Dhoni’s unbeaten 26 off just 11 balls, including two massive sixes and some vintage helicopter – changed the entire script for CSK this time.
Lucknow SuperGiants: 166/7 (20 Overs)
Chennai Super Kings: 170/5 (19.5 Overs)
This match was more than just a win for CSK. This makes a statement, a strong reminder that they may be down at times but never out. As for LSG, this loss could sting a bit as they let the match out of their hands which was still in their grasp. But there’s one thing we all know, this year’s IPL you don’t blink or you miss the match. Expect the unexpected.
