CSK vs. MI: Match Highlights, Scorecard and Best Moments

If your heart didn’t skip a beat during CSK vs MI at Wankhede, are you even an IPL fan?  On April 20, 2025, we saw two of the league’s storied franchises battle it out. You could say that Mumbai showed up to play while Chennai showed up to… make it confusing.

Let’s get into it—all the way from the statistics to the “oh no they didn’t” moments.

First Innings: Chennai’s Score 176/6

CSK won the toss and chose to bat first in the hopes of amassing a reasonable total. The game started positively for the men in yellow. Ruturaj Gaikwad looked strong as ever with a confident 64 off 48 balls – great cover drives, footwork and calming influence. Shivam Dube brought the fireworks with a 25-ball 45, which made MI bowlers and fans quite uneasy for a short period of time. Moeen Ali and Ambati Rayudu had 20s, but their innings were over before it ever had a chance to light up the world.

And with that, comes the confusing decision – MS Dhoni batting at No. 7 again. (Groans from fans around the world) The legend had a T20I type innings, with just 9 runs off of 9 balls – Not exactly what the night had planned with the legend standing at the crease! MI’s bowlers had been tight and tactically sound. Jasprit Bumrah was the destroyer in chief with 2 for 27 and Piyush Chawla was tidy in the middle overs. In the end, CSK could only bring 176/6 on the scoreboard. Somewhat decent (but most importantly in T20’s chaseable) score at Wankhede.

Second Innings: The Rohit-Ishan Show

While chasing a target of 177, Mumbai didn’t simply chase—they hunted. Rohit Sharma unleashed his vintage form and showed all of us what ‘Hitman Mode’ looks like. He whacked an unbeaten 76 off 44 balls—6 massive sixes and 4 fours.

Ishan Kishan was not to be left out, as he scored an entertaining 58 off 31 balls, clearly enjoying the opportunity to target CSK’s pace attack. Their opening partnership of 121 had so totally destroyed Chennai’s chances, even before the 13th over!

MI finished in only 15.4 overs. Brutal. Businesslike. Bollywood.

Best Moments: That made you Rewind

Rohit Sharma’s Six off Jadeja: The batter danced down the pitch, struck the ball clean over long-on, and Wankhede went mad.

Dube’s One-Handed Six: The most ridiculous flick over square leg. Without a doubt, CSK’s shot of the day.

Ishan’s Ramp Shot: He took on Deepak Chahar with a cheeky ramp over fine leg. Legendary.

Bumrah’s Death Overs: Perfect yorkers, slower balls, dot pressure, you name it, he had it covered.

What went wrong for CSK?

Where do we start?

  • Bowling Blues: Deepak Chahar and Mustafizur Rahman were unable to find any rhythm or variations in pace, and Jadeja and Moeen Ali were ineffective in combating MI’s aggression.
  • Fielding Flops: Missed catches and bad-fielding affected morale. A crucial drop-in the innings on Rohit? Game-changer.
  • Tactical Confusion: Dhoni coming so low? No proactive change in bowling? It came across that CSK were in reaction rather than in control.

Post-match Dhoni claimed they were “outplayed in all departments” – and frankly we could not agree more.

If anything was proven today, it was that MI were not done. Rohit Sharma has found his stride, and when he does, Mumbai run like a machine. CSK fans, that one hurt. But the tournament is not over.

So, whether you’re with Team Yellow or Team Blue, grab your snacks – the IPL has only just begun. More drama, more sixes, more twists are yet to come.
