The film ‘Chhava’ is brought to screen based on the Marathi Novel ‘Chhava’ written by the author Shivaji Sawant an renowned Marathi writer. The movie shows the life of Sambhaji Mahraj and begins with the death of his father Chhatrapati Shivaji Mahraj. The story is set during the rule of Aurangazeb of Mughal Empire, and the earlier stages of the rise of Maratha rulers. The storyline could be considered a snippet of the Mughal-Maratha wars in history. Sambhaji is the second ruler in the Maratha rulers’ history in India. As Aurangazeb rejoices in the death of the old Chhatrapati Mahraj the news of his crushed army reaches his ears, with the arrival of Sambhaji the son of Shivaji Mahraj. Vicky Kaushal’s intro scene as the Mahraj is where he rips open a lion’s jaw with his bare hands and emerges out unscathed. After defeating the war he returns home to a warm welcome by Yesubai played by Rashmika Mandanna.
The woe in Aurangzeb is not quenched and he plots to capture Sambhaji and crush the Maratha Empire. The movie shows how smart and brilliant the real Chhatrapati Sambhaji Mahraj was. During the war times, Aurangazeb forces outnumber the Maratha forces and Sambhaji suggests a clever move of Guerilla attack. And no matter how hard they fought, Aurangazeb forces surrounded the Maratha forces on all sides. Captured by Aurangaeb, Sambhaji faces cruelty and inhumane torture inflicted upon him. These scenes are definitely not for the faint-hearted audience. Vicky Kaushal’s performance throughout the movie remained splendid. And the unsung hero is Akshaye Khanna who makes us hate him and that’s how well he carried himself as Aurangazeb.
The movie majorly garnered a positive response from all the audience. Though some of them did criticise Rashmika Mandanna’s casting in the film. The viewers who expected a rustic feel when gazing at Yesubai were reportedly disappointed. “Too much of a southern accent” – an instagrammer commented on Rashmika’s language in the movie Yesubai. They felt her Hindi was not authentic. But her performance in the movie was absolutely stunning in the movie, making her an underappreciated one in the cast.
People felt pride and admiration rise in themselves seeing the Sambhaji fight in the war and die like a true king. And that the movie was worth watching in theatres multiple times.
The movie made Rs 31 crore on its first day of business, which was followed by Rs 37 crore on the second. On the third day, Chhaava made its biggest single-day collection of Rs 48.5 crore. In its first week of release, the film brought in an incredible Rs 219.25 crore. It is still operating and has generated about Rs 402.54 crore until February, with much more to come. In just two weeks, Chhaava has brought in a total of Rs 566.02 crore worldwide. The entire budget of the movie was 130 to 140 crores. And the movie has so far gained a whopping sum of rupees 640 crores.
Following its positive response the movie, ‘Chhava’ is all set to be released in telugu. And the fans are excited by the trailer that the team dropped. Telugu fans are all roared up to watch the movie on-screen soon.
